REVIEW OF COSTA RICA BEANS FROM LANCASTER

AFTER GRINDING YOUR COSTA RICA BEANS, THE AROMA AND LOOK (COLOR, ETC) WAS STRIKINGLY SIMILAR TO THE LANCASTER ETHIOPIAN I ALSO RECENTLY GROUND AND BREWED. THE STRANGEST THING WAS, I HAVE HAD SEVERAL COSTA RICA & ETHIOPIAN BEANS FROM OTHER VENDOR COMPANIES OVER LAST SEVERAL YEARS. SO WHAT IS STRANGE IS, WHILE DOING A POUR-OVER MANUAL BREW, THE COSTA RICAN BEANS IMMEDIATELY EXHIBITED A VERY PROFUSE PUFFY RISE DURING INITIAL BLOOM PHASE WHICH WAS MUCH HIGHER THAN ANY COSTA RICA BEANS I'VE HAD. AT THE SAME TIME, THE COFFEE SEEMED OVERLY EARTHY TO THE EXTENT WHICH I'VE ONLY EVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE WHILE BREWING VERY EARTHY LOW-ACID JAVA, INDIA MALABAR, OR SUMATRA COFFEE, WHICH OF COURSE IS THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY FROM COSTA RICA. MORE STRIKING WAS FACT THAT THE LANCASTER ETHIOPIAN I BREWED SEEMED EXACTLY LIKE THE LANCASTER COSTA RICAN; SAME EXTREME PUFF RISE DURING BLOOM, AND ALSO SIMILAR TO THE WEST INDIES COFFEES JUST MENTIONED. SO THE UPSHOT HERE, NEVER BEFORE HAVE I NOTICED SUCH STRIKING SIMILARITIES BEWTEEN (WHAT SHOULD BE) VERY DIFFERING SOURCED COFFEES FROM COMPELTELY DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD. ETHIOPION SHOULD NOT BREW, BLOOM, NOR SMELL EXACTLY LIKE COSTA RICAN BEANS. YET THERE IT WAS, RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. AND THE TASTE OF BOTH COFFEES (WHILE QUITE DRINKABLE) WERE VERY SIMILAR IN TASTE AND BREW COLOR HUE. THUS I HAVE TO ASK: IS IT POSSIBLE THAT AN ERROR WAS MADE RELATIVE TO PERHAPS THE SAME BEANS BEING LOADED INTO TWO DIFFERENTLY LABELED BEAN BAGS?? I'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS, BUT I HAVE PURCHASED A LARGE AMOUNT OF DIFFERENT COUNTY SOURCED BEANS OVER LAST SEVERAL YEARS, AND THERE'S ALWAYS A DISTINCT COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SMELL, TASTE & BLOOM DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN DIFFERENT COFFEE BEANS - BUT NOT BETWEEN THE LANCASTER ETHIOPIAN & COSTA RICAN THAT I PURCHASED. SIDE NOTE, the email I received from LCCR invited me to comment on the Costa Rican beans I bought; however there was no link to comment on it. Rather, the link provided was soley for Kenya beans (which I also purchased but didn't yet try); thus I'm providing the Costa Rican beans review. Many Thanks

    Give Kenya a try!

Kenya tends to be too wine-y for my palate, but this one is an absolute winner! The fruit notes don't come off too strong and are very balanced with the cane sugar and cocoa notes. The roast is a perfect medium - not too light, not too dark. I can confidently say this roast is for everyone!
